Should I ever discard a Joker in American Mahjong?

Rarely, and only on purpose. A Joker is the most useful tile in the set, so it stays while any group of three or more in your hand can use it. Throw it when it truly has nowhere to sit, most often when you are waiting on a single or a pair, or when your hand is dead and you need a discard nobody can call.

Why the answer is usually no

A Joker may stand in any pung, kong, quint or sextet, for any number, wind, dragon or Flower. That makes it a tile that fits many hands at once, and every one of them is a way to win. Throwing it away gives up all of those at a stroke.

It also cannot come back. A discarded Joker is dead the instant it touches the table. Nobody may call it, including you, and nobody may trade for it later. Every other discard has a moment of life in the center. A Joker has none.

When it has nowhere to sit

A Joker may never fill a single or a pair, and it may never sit in NEWS, a year or a run of different numbers. So a player who is one tile from Mahjong and waiting on a pair can draw a Joker and find it worth exactly nothing. The same is true of every line in the Singles and Pairs section, which cannot take a Joker anywhere.

Before you let it go, look once more. A neighboring line on the card may turn that pair into a pung, and a pung will take the Joker gladly. If such a line exists and keeps you one tile away, switch to it, keep the Joker and throw a natural tile instead. Your wait is wider for it, because now any Joker drawn will finish you too. If no such line exists, or the group you would need to change is already exposed, the Joker is the right tile to throw.

There is a consolation. A hand that allows Jokers and wins with none at all is jokerless and its value doubles. Throw the only Joker you held, finish on a natural tile, and you may collect the double. Singles and Pairs is the exception, since its printed values already include it.

When your hand is dead

A dead hand keeps drawing and discarding until someone wins, and its only job is to avoid feeding the winner. For that job a Joker is the one perfectly safe throw, because nobody can ever call it. If you have folded, or your hand has been called dead, spend your Jokers as discards before you risk a tile somebody might be waiting on.

What the table reads into it

A thrown Joker is never a quiet discard. Early in the hand it tells a careful player that you are probably building singles and pairs, since that is the only reason to want no Joker. Late in the hand it says you are either waiting on a pair or done for. Neither is a reason to keep a Joker you cannot use, but throw it knowing what it says, and let your other discards stay ordinary.

When you do throw one, say Joker. Same, or the name of the previous discard, is also accepted, and none of them opens a call.

A Joker is a guest of honor, darling. Show it the door only when there is truly no chair for it. ~ Prim
