The steward who kept the card worthy of our trust.
Ruth Unger served as president of the National Mah Jongg League for nearly thirty years, from the early 1970s into the early 2000s. She was not a media figure and never tried to be. She was a steward, in the oldest sense of the word, and under her the League grew into an institution that shipped hundreds of thousands of cards a year.
She understood that the card is the common language, the reason a game in Ohio looks like a game in Florida or California, and she kept the committee that writes it serious and experienced, chosen for judgment rather than celebrity. Ruth passed away in 2015. Prim remembered her in Letter 11: at this table we remember the soldiers, and we also remember the stewards. She appears again in Letter 23, as the League president who was asked, in 1986, whether there might be a tournament at sea. The League said yes.
