Can a concealed hand win on someone else's discard?

Yes. A concealed hand may never call a discard to make an exposure, but it may call the fourteenth tile, the one that completes Mahjong, from anyone's discard. It may also win on a tile drawn from the wall. The belief that a concealed hand must be self picked is simply wrong.

The one tile a concealed hand may call

A concealed line is marked C at the end of the line on the card, and it asks you to build the whole hand behind your rack. That means no calling a discard for a pung, a kong, a quint or a sextet. Every one of those groups must come from the Charleston and from your own draws.

The fourteenth tile is different. The tile that completes Mahjong may be called from the center by any player, whatever kind of hand they hold. When the last tile you need is thrown, call it, lay the whole hand face up on top of the rack, and let the table check it against the card. Concealment was the discipline of the building, not a vow about the finish.

Even for a single or a pair

Many concealed lines finish on a single or a pair, and the Singles and Pairs section is concealed in its entirety. Ordinarily a discard can never be called for a single or a pair. The winning tile is the one exception, in a concealed hand as in an exposed one. If your last gap is the second tile of a pair, the discard that fills it is yours to claim.

What a call for an exposure does to the hand

Call a discard for anything short of Mahjong and you have made an exposure, and a hand with an exposure is no longer concealed. That is not automatically a disaster. If the group you laid down fits an exposed line on the card, you are simply playing that line now, and nothing is dead until another player can prove it.

The traffic runs one way only. A concealed hand may switch to an exposed line at any time. An exposed hand may never switch back to a concealed one, because the exposure is already on the table and cannot be taken back into the rack.

How it is paid

A concealed hand won on a discard is paid like any other discard win. The player who threw the winning tile pays double the value printed on the card, and the other two pay the printed value. Won from the wall, it is self picked, and all three pay double.

There is no separate bonus for concealment. The concealed lines already carry higher values on the card, and that printed value is the whole reward. On the 2026 card there are 12 concealed lines, so the question comes up at nearly every table.

Keep the hand to yourself all the way to the last tile, darling, and then take that tile from whoever is kind enough to throw it. ~ Prim
