What happens if you call Mahjong by mistake?

If you catch a mistaken Mahjong call at once, before your hand is shown and before anyone else disturbs theirs, there is no penalty and play goes on. If you have laid your hand out and the other hands are still intact, your hand is dead: you stop drawing and discarding, and you pay the eventual winner the full value of the winning hand.

Caught at once, it costs nothing

Everybody has said the word a tile too early. If you realize before you have exposed your hand, and before anyone else has thrown in or disturbed their tiles, you simply say so and the game carries on. No penalty, no fuss.

This is also why nobody at the table should throw in their own hand the moment somebody says Mahjong. A declaration is checked against the card first. Until the winner's hand has been verified, every other hand stays exactly where it is.

Called on a discard and found short

Sometimes a player calls a discard for Mahjong, places the tile on the rack or lays some tiles out, and then sees the hand is not complete. If the tile can legally be called for an exposure, the player may change the declaration into a call for that exposure and play on. There is no penalty for this either.

Hand shown, others intact: the hand is dead

Once part or all of the hand has been exposed, and the other three hands are still intact, the declarer's hand is dead. The exposed tiles go back to the rack, and the player stops drawing, discarding and calling for the rest of the hand. When someone else wins, the dead hand pays that winner the full value of the winning hand, at the single rate. Play continues among the others.

Jokers in exposures that were called correctly before the error stay on the rack, and the live players may still redeem them. If the false declaration was on a concealed hand, everything goes back and nothing on that rack may be redeemed.

If other players have already thrown in

The mistake grows if the table reacted to it. If one other player has thrown in their hand, play continues between the two players whose hands are still intact, and if one of those then goes dead, that player pays the remaining player double the value of the hand they were attempting. If two other players threw in, the false declarer pays the one player who did not double the value of that player's hand. And anyone who destroys the wall before the error is discovered pays each remaining player the lowest value on the card.

Tournaments, and the friendly table

At a tournament there is no forgiveness at all: a false Mahjong with tiles showing is dead on the spot. Home tables vary. Plenty of groups let a newer player take it back and carry on, and that is a perfectly good house choice, provided it is agreed before the first hand rather than argued about in the middle of one.
