Monthly classes and a Monday league keep the tiles moving in Bloomington

A student paper finds American mah jongg tables at a brewery, a Chabad deck and a campus culture center.

The Indiana Daily Student reported on October 19 that mahjong is drawing players across ages and backgrounds in Bloomington, Indiana. On the American side, the paper profiled Mahj in Bloom, founded by instructor Trish Surfus.

According to the report, Surfus runs a two-class beginner series each month at Heartwork Brewing on North College Avenue, along with a six-week Monday night league there for veteran players. The paper also said her group was set to begin an eight-week league on October 25.

The paper also described a Monday evening group of players at Chabad at IU, and weekly Monday and Wednesday afternoon sessions at the Indiana University Asian Culture Center, where students play Chinese mahjong.

OOTT is not affiliated with any of the groups named.
