For Beginners

Four Tuesdays to a first full hand at DOROT on the Upper West Side

A fifty year old Manhattan organization that fights loneliness among older adults has started a free beginner series in American Mahjong, taught by one of its volunteers.

DOROT's Mahjong for Beginners meets four Tuesdays, from November 3 to December 1, at 171 West 85th Street, taking newcomers from the tiles and the card to a first full hand. A DOROT volunteer leads it, and this round's registration has closed.

DOROT was founded in 1976 to ease isolation among older New Yorkers and offers its programs free of charge. Prim tells the whole story.
