Abbe Blacker runs the Minneapolis Mah Jongg Club from Edina, just outside Minneapolis, and Mpls.St.Paul Magazine called her the queen bee of mahjong in the Twin Cities. She has taught across the area for more than a decade, much of it through community education programs, the humble places where a town actually learns things.
She learned the game from the friends of her late mother. The clicking of the tiles, she has said, was the sound of her childhood. What she built is plain and welcoming: a four week beginner series, and the Mahj Mixer, casual social play for people who would rather learn by sitting down. Prim noted with delight that she was the second teacher from the northern end of the map to earn this feature.
