At the Table

A breast cancer fundraiser in Briarcliff Manor sold out in under a week

A Westchester player planned a mah jongg afternoon for 40 to support Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and the seats were gone within days.

Mara Morr, a Briarcliff Manor resident of 16 years, organized "For the Racks," a mah jongg fundraiser at the William J. Vescio Community Center for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, according to The Examiner News. Proceeds supported Making Strides Against Breast Cancer through the American Cancer Society.

Per the report, Morr expected 40 players, and the event sold out in less than a week, with people asking to be put on a waiting list. Morr, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at 49 and is now 55 and doing well, only took up the game last fall. "I was just floored by the passion and the way the MJ community just rallied for it," she told the paper.

The Examiner News describes the game catching on at libraries and community centers across Westchester, including Chappaqua, Pleasantville, Mount Kisco and Briarcliff, with players at the event ranging from a 5 year old learner to an 82 year old regular.

Prim's opinion: a charity table that fills in a week tells you something about the players near you. If you host one, start a waiting list on the first day.
