The Charleston Club sets its tables inside a charcuterie shop in Lee's Summit

A new American mahjong club in downtown Lee's Summit, Missouri, has lessons sold out through December and a Halloween masquerade on the calendar, according to The Kansas City Star.

Laura Maxwell opened The Charleston Club in early September inside Madison Social Charcuterie on Third Street in downtown Lee's Summit, The Kansas City Star reports. The club teaches beginner American mahjong as a three lesson package and hosts open play and events in the shop's space, with charcuterie available during play.

According to the report, an anonymous survey in August drew 352 people saying they were interested, the club's Facebook page launched August 12 and had almost 800 followers by late September, and lesson classes were sold out through December. "I've been incredibly pleasantly overwhelmed," Maxwell told the paper.

The Star lists a Mahjong Masquerade on October 31 from 1 to 4 p.m. with games, soups, treats and prizes, a Merry Mahj Mart on November 30, and a possible league later this year. The article does not give prices or hours, so check with the club before you go.
