An American mahjong club at Lincoln's Asian Center grows to eight tables

A monthly club at Lincoln's Asian Community and Cultural Center has had to turn players away at the door.

The Asian Community and Cultural Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, hosts an American mahjong club from 5 to 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at 144 N. 44th St., Suite A, according to the Daily Nebraskan. The club began nearly two years ago.

Early on the club ran two to four tables of four players, the paper reports. In July a surge filled eight tables. "We had eight tables set up, and we had to turn people away at the door," Lisa Guill, the center's director of communications and development, told the Daily Nebraskan.

Guill described the club as a way to build real connections across the community, and offered newcomers simple advice: hold the game openly and be curious. Per the report, the center plans to move to the Cultural Centers of Lincoln building in May 2027.

In Prim's opinion, it is a fine thing to learn the American game at a center devoted to Asian culture and community, where the game's Chinese roots are part of the welcome.
