She built a troop, and now she is building the next generation.
Kristel Powell, a San Antonio native, founded Troop Mahjong, which many players know through her own bright corner of the internet, Stylin Brunette. It is what happens when a deep love of the film Troop Beverly Hills meets a deeper love of the tiles: mahjong as something joyful, a little glamorous, and unmistakably a community. She teaches across San Antonio and the Hill Country towns around it.
Prim featured her for the direction she points all that energy. Outward, with a Chapter Leader program that lets others carry the troop into their own towns. And younger, teaching children ages eight to twelve the game their grandmothers played, handed to them as play and as a troop to belong to. That, Prim wrote, is how this game has always survived: passed hand to hand, from someone who loves it to someone about to.
