Oh My Mahjong

The geometry of the tile face

Tiles, and teachers

The choices you never notice, and always feel.

In Letter 2 Prim sent readers to Oh My Mahjong's Emerald set: a high definition emerald texture under polished acrylic, jewel toned and unapologetic, the kind of set a Bond villain would play with, meant as the highest compliment.

In Letter 9, on the designers shaping the next decade of American tiles, she credited them with something subtler: reimagining the geometry of the tile face itself, the proportions, the typography of the numbers, the negative space around each symbol. Choices most players never notice, she wrote, that still register in how fast you read a rack and how a set feels in the hand. Two of the teachers in this hall, Chris Welsand and Shauna of Las Vegas Mahjong, are certified Oh My Mahjong instructors.
