Four Wednesdays to learn American mah jongg in Hinsdale

Two retired high school teachers start a small beginner class at The Community House on October 28.

The Community House in Hinsdale, Illinois, lists a four week beginner class in American mah jongg on Wednesdays October 28 and November 4, 11 and 18, at 415 West Eighth Street. The fee is $100, according to the listing.

Pam and Keith Baldwin, described as two retired high school educators, teach the class, which takes four to eight students. Per the listing, the instructors need an even number of players at every lesson, and anyone who cannot make the first two sessions is asked not to enroll.

Students will need a 2026 standard National Mah Jongg League card, which The Community House says it now sells at its front desk. If the class fills, the listing asks players to join the waitlist, since the house calls when a seat opens.
